12/27/2023 0 Comments Mical android![]() The fact that it is he who learns about Kreia's shananigans must really be worth something. He is a very intriguing character, an apprentice who did not became a Jedi, thus saved from being poisoned by their teachings the Republic soldier who has a bigger picture than others, as he has a connection to the Force and understanding of it. ![]() I wish we were able to see Mical as he was intended. It doesn't really give him a compelling arc, but it shows he had much more prepared in store for him. The Mical we need is one who has his childish optimism challenged, broken, and re-forged, with an even greater commitment to goodness that's based in individual acts of doing good rather than hiding behind an organization like the Republic or the Jedi Order. When his black-and-white morality is challenged by a messy galaxy, he breaks - but instead of clinging to organized good and losing his humanity, he clings to doing good and is freed from his cloistered, nuanced-as-a-brick worldview. A better-written Mical stands in counterpoint to both the Jedi Masters and Kreia - he re-learns that what made the Jedi great was their commitment to defending the helpless and safeguarding justice, not being secluded monks that only come out of their temples when there's a chance to be the hero. What Mical needs isn't to double-down on his goody-two-shoes-ness, nor abandon his optimism. Each character has beautiful development and resolution of their scars.Įveryone else confronts their past and their weaknesses and gets to grow through those experiences in some really touching ways. Atton confesses his past and finds forgiveness and friendship from the last of the Jedi Mandalore wrestles with his fear over the Mandalorians' future and whether they will ever regain their honor and greatness Bao finds peace in knowing his weapon of mass destruction now had a hand in saving the galaxy Handmaiden finally escapes from Atris's controlling dogmatism Visas makes peace with her traumatized past HK puts an end to the HK-copies - you get the picture. Even T3 and HK have sad backstories - T3 is an abandoned puppy in a world that's much scarier than last time, and HK even has to deal with the shame of having his good name slandered by inferior copies.Īnd each character gets to confront those challenges in some really sweet, touching ways. KotOR 2 has a wonderful palette of backstories to work with, from Bao-Dur's guilt and trauma over creating the Mass Shadow Generator to Visas dealing with surviving a genocide and enslavement to Mandalore's stubborn pride and resilience in the face of the Mandalorians' fall from greatness. They are "good" because their actions are "good," not the other way around. ![]() The Jedi and the Republic both forget that they are not intrinsically the good guys rather, they have been the good guys because they did good things. What all these Jedi and Sith and soldiers and bounty hunters and whatever-the-heck-you-call-Kreia miss is that it's NOT good or evil "organized" that are important, it's the choices you make. ![]() Kreia sees what they miss, but also ends up hurting a lot of people - intentionally - in her quest to point it out. The Jedi Masters are "good," but they're stagnant and missing the point. KotOR 2 does deconstruct good and evil, but more importantly it reconstructs them at the same time. KotOR 2 is about exploring the nuance of right and wrong, but ironically (IMO) it ends up affirming the goodness of good and the badness of bad far more than any other Star Wars content. He's a clean-cut guy in a messy world, and he comes off as pretty obnoxious when you compare his backstory of "Wasn't chosen to be a Jedi" with Visas "sole genocide survivor tortured into being a Sith" and Bao "PTSD from creating a superweapon that killed millions of people." I resonate with Mical a lot, actually - he's the "good kid" with absolutely 0 life experience, unquestioningly devoted to "goodness" but in a way that doesn't really let him process his own (and others') failures. I think people miss that Mical is not an inherently bad character, he just didn't get the good writing the others got.
